THE RELIGIOUS LIFE OF THE ANCIENT PEOPLE OF MEXICO After socio-economic studies of the people of ancient MEXICO in our earlier blogs , it is our pertinent duty to let you know about the religious life , their ways of worship , existence of temples etc in the ancient MEXICAN society as such . Like people of ancient INDIA the people of ancient MEXICO were quite religious and they had ardent beliefs that the God had created this world . They considered the God as Omniscient , Omnipotent and omnipresent . Quite similar to the belief system that the ancient INDIAN people had . But in the due courses of time their beliefs in one God crumbled down and they started worshiping different deities . And no one could believe that how such a religious minded people become so cruel sacrificing human hearts to the different deities of their times . There were at least 213 deities later existed among the people of the ancient MEXICO . And for each deity one day of the week had been fixed . And the festival of that day was celebrated as per the wishes of that deity . The deity of the day was offered food as per his acceptance and liking . This was the changed notion of the religious life of the later MAXICAN people .

HUITZILOPOCHTLI HUITZILOPOCHTLI was the SUN GOD and the WAR GOD of the people of ancient MEXICO . As per the MAXICAN scriptures HUITZILOPOCHTLI killed his nephew COPIL and threw his heart in the lake of TEXCOCO over which a cactus was grown which was later on worshiped by the people of MEXICO . It is also said that on the island located in the middle of Lake TEXCOCO , the ancient city of TANOCHITITLAN was built which now-a-days is called MEXICO CITY . People believed that this deity was born decorated with arms in his hands by birth and had a feather tied in his left leg . He had shield in his right hand and crown of colorful feathers on his head . This dreadful deity was believed to be the protector of the people of MEXICO and people used to , time and again , decorated him with precious jewelry and his temple was more beautifully built than the temples of other deities . Wherever the temple of the deity of HUITZILOPOCHTLI existed , human sacrifices were done per day without fail .
QUETZALCOATL QUETZALCOATL was the second most important deity of the the people of ancient MEXICO . Etymologically speaking it meant a snake with features . He was considered as a deity of the wind and the morning star . This legendary God was said to have come from the east before the annexation of MEXICO by SPAIN . He was a handsome , white looking tall person having long beard and equally long hair . He was considered as the master trainer as he taught the MAXICAN people as to : how to make alloys out of different metals , how to grow and cultivate agricultural products and how to have better governance as such . Effect of this was that the region was full of flora and founa . It is also said that during that period the maize cob/meccan were grown so weighty that even a very strong man could anyhow lift it up . Similarly , cottons of different colors were grown by the people of MEXICO by learning the method of how to growth them from him . But unfortunately this particular God decided to leave MEXICO due to his annoyance with some other deity of of the areas . So , he went eastwards and decided to live at CHULULA CITY where he was welcomed by the local people and a temple on his name was constructed and dedicated to him by them . Before departuring from MEXICO he told the local people , who had come to see him off , that one day his decedent white people from the east would come and rule over MEXICO . This verbatim sounded for long in the ears of the people of MEXICO . And they had an ardent belief that the QUETZALCOATL would attack that land one day . And when HERNAN CORTES , a SPANISH conquistador attacked MEXICO in 1519 , the people of MEXICO without much resistance accepted his suzerainty .
TLALOC & OTHER DEITIES TLALOC was the God of thunder . MIXCOTL was the tribal God of the NAHUA people. METZTLI was the God of the MOON . TLALTECUHTLI was the God of the EARTH . Similarly , more than 213 God/Deities existed in the ancient MAXICAN society . And all of them have different line of worship . But human sacrifices were common of them . That’s why , it is said that, due to the prevailing existance of human sacrifices in their religious lives , these religions could not continue for long as such .

TEOTIHUACAN TEOTIHUACAN was the highest pyramid of MEXICO . It was dedicated to the SUN & MOON God . It is said that during the inauguration of this pyramid the heats of about twenty thousands people were sacrificed to the SUN GOD . It is also said that the Executioners were so trained in taking out hearts from human bodies that they used to take out more than fifty hearts in an hour as such . The temples of MEXICO had more than 600 AGNI KUNDA where human sacrifices were made as such . These temples had thousands of priests for performing sacrifices/worship . The temples were in the shape of pyramids and had three to four floors . Steps were built in the round shape from outside the temple . Over the roof was a wide space where one or two about fifty feet high ambrella type of shapes were built between wich the deity of the particular God was established . Two stones were dug into floor before the deity . One for human sacrifices and other for the priest who was instrumental in performing such sacrifices as such .
