A FINEST MONARCH TRAN THANH TONG
According to a historian like NGO SI LIEN of LE DYNASTY , Emperor TRAN THANH TONG was one of the finest monarchs of the TRAN DYNASTY . He was not only a righteous ruler , but also a kind-hearted brother , a dutiful son and a father with sense of responsibility . It caused not only the stability of the royal family but also the entire country . That’s why the reign of Emperor TRAN THANH TONG brought about prosperity and peace in DAI VIET for a long period . And he also had written a literary book called DI HAU LUC . He was a staunch BUDDHIST , for that a CONFUCIAN historian like NGO SI LIEN sometimes criticized Emperor TRAN THANH TONG for his devotion for BUDDHISM to such extent . NGO SI LIEN , the principal compiler of a comprehensive chronicle of the history of VIETNAM , the oldest official historical record of a VIETNAMESE DYNASTY and that chronicle was called as DAI VIET SU KY TOAN THU , had further stated that it was not suitable for a person like Emperor TRAN THANH TONG , holding such a high position , to be such a staunch BUDDHIST .
THE ECONOMY AND ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEM DURING EMPEROR TRAN THANH TONG
After his enthronement , Emperor TRAN THANH TONG and his father paid attention towards the economy and administrative system of DAI VIET which had been totally damaged by the MONGOL invasion . In June 1261 AD , Emperor TRAN THANH TONG opened an examination for scholars who wanted to be appointed as mandarins of the administrative system . Such examination was comprised of the testing of two abilities : 1.Writing ; and 2. Calculating . He stared appointing right person for the right position in the Royal Court . For example , he appointed his brother Prince CHIEU MINH TRAN QUANG KHAI for the position of Grand Chancellor and Prince HUNG DAO TRAN QUOC TUAN for the position of military commander . And both were scholars . In March 1266 AD , Emperor TRAN THANH TONG ordered his first imperial examination to be carried out , in which more than 50 scholars were selected for the high-ranking position in the Royal Court and administrative system of DAI VIET. Due to his intellectual ability of his brother TRAN ICH TAC , he permitted to open a private school in the former palace to teach and train more scholars for the royal court . At the same time , the Emperor also reinforced DAI VIET’S army by several recruitments by reorganizing the military ; so that its efficiency could be improved . Moreover , due to the potential threat , he always remained vigilant to the northern border by sending several scout units to learn about the military actions of the YUAN DYNASTY.
