THE QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT & BIHAR The QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT was a decisive uprising against the British Imperialism in INDIA . It was a popular mass movement . Popular in the sense that almost all classes of people took part in this movement . After GANDHI’S CHAMPARAN MOVEMENT , QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT of 1942 was a movement which shook the British Rule in INDIA from within . The working committee of the ALL INDIA CONGRESS COMMITTEE (AICC) passed a historical resolution of British , QUIT INDIA on dated August 5, 1942 which was unanimously approved by the ALL INDIA CONGRESS COMMITTEE ( AICC ) in its meeting held in BOMBAY on August 8, 1942 . MAHATMA GANDHI , while addressing the meeting of the AICC , gave a slogan like ‘ DO OR DIE ‘. On August 9, 1942 the entire country was ready for the movement as MAHATMA GANDHI and all the members of the AICC were put behind the bars . In limited time the movement spread like a wild fire in the entire country including BIHAR .
The impact of QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT on the people of BIHAR was such that the almost all prominent leaders of the state were arrested before the movement became intensive . Dr. RAJENDRA PRASAD was arrested by the then collector of Patna W.G. ARCHER when he was reading a Newspaper in the morning in his house and he was sent to BANKIPUR JAIL . On August 10 , SRI KRISHN SINHA ( Later Hon’ble first Chief Minister of Bihar after independence ) was arrested from the house of SRI SARANGDHAR SINGH , located in the EXHIBITION ROAD , PATNA . SRI ANUGRAH NARAYAN SINGH was arrested on August 11, 1942 . They all were important leaders of BIHAR . Not only that that prominent leaders of the state of BIHAR were arrested but the British Government promulgated an ordinance duly published in the official Gazette of BIHAR on dated 9th August 1942 declaring the AICC and its branches in the state ( including headquarter at the SADAKAT ASHRAM ) and the districts of BIHAR as illegal and an order was issued to confiscate their funds and properties as such . Publications of News of the movement in Papers were completely banned . Punishment was assigned for such publications of News to the Editors of the Newspapers . All these activities of the Government arouse the feeling among the youths of the state that the Government ruling in the state of BIHAR was quite alien and anti-people and they must be dethroned urgently . Thus , the QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT , took a form of Revolutionary Movement later on in the entire state of BIHAR as such .
On August 10, 1942 the SADAKAT ASHRAM ( THE HEADQUARTER OF THE BIHAR STATE CONGRESS COMMITTEE ) , OFFICE OF THE KISAN SABHA located in KADAMKUAN ( A MUHALLA OF PATNA ) , THE OFFICE OF THE PATNA DISTRICT CONGRESS COMMITTEE and the office of the CONGRESS SOCIALIST PARTY were attached with immediate effect . In view of such oppressive steps taken by the British Government in the state , the youths especially students jumped into the movement . They hoisted tricolor flags on the buildings of the educational institutions like PATNA COLLEGE , B.N. COLLEGE , PATNA TRAINING COLLEGE , RAM MOHUN ROY SEMINARY SCHOOL , P.N. ANGLO SANSKRIT SCHOOL , PATNA COLLEGIATE SCHOOL and most of the teaching institutions of the state of BIHAR on August 10 itself . In MUZAFFERPUR about 5000 students took out procession and they hoisted the tricolor flag on the Government treasury of the town by removing the UNION JACK from there . Similarly , students hoisted tricolor flags on their educational institutions like L.S COLLEGE , TIRHUT TEXTILE INSTITUTE and MARWARI SCHOOL in the MUZAFFERPUR town . A dozen of prominent leaders from MUZAFFERPUR , DARBHANGA and CHHAPARA were arrested and put behind the bars without any prior notice or information as such . The police started firing on the mob of people who wanted to hoist tricolor flag on the building of LALGANJ POST OFFICE on August 11 , 1942 in which two persons were lost their lives and about 45 people were injured . The name of dead people were respectively: SRI SIDDHESWAR THAKUR & SRI VIBHISHAN MAHARAJ . In the town of BHAGALPUR , SRI KRITI NARAYAN SINGH , SRI JAMAYAT SINGH & SRI HARNARAYAN JAIN were arrested under the notorious DEFENCE OF INDIA RULE from the LAJPAT PARK on August 11 while they were addressing the crowd which had assembled to listen them about the later development of the movement as such . People , all most communities , took part in the movement . Labours of DHANBAD & JHARIA coal mines went on strike in support of the movement . The Labours of the ROHTASH INDUSTRIES in DALMIYANAGAR went on strike and took out procession against the police atrocities hurled upon the innocent people of BIHAR . The HINDUS and the MUSLIMS unitedly took parts in the movement . Working class , Down trodden , Dalits and even Police Union ( under the leadership of SRI RAMANAND TIWARI ) protested against such atrocities by the Police which further aggravated the QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT in BIHAR .
