Born on 10th October 1906 in Chennai, Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami , popularly known as R.K. NARAYAN , was one of the Indo-Angalian writers of the late thirties who entered into the club of Indian writers writing in English with his famous novel SWAMI AND FRIENDS ( 1935 ) . It is a novel about a fictional town called MALGUDI , a non-existent town or a town of his imagination , located somewhere in the South India. His second novel called THE BACHELOR OF ARTS ( 1937 ) again also revolves around the fictional town of his imagination called MALGUDI . The third in series of novels he wrote is THE DARK ROOM ( 1938 ) . The story of the novel again is related to that of a mysterious, imaginary and fictional town of MALGUDI which had engulfed the mind of R.K.NARAYAN from within.
THE ENGLISH TEACHER ( 1945 ) is a novel dedicated to his wife Rajam . The story is about a series of trouble faced by Krishna , the hero of the novel , after the death of his wife. He remained in quest for inner peace and tranquility. His emphasis on self-development could very much be observed in this novel . It appears to be his autobiographical novel , dedicated to his wife Rajam , who died in 1939 . MR. SAMPATH ( 1948 ) again revolves around the fictional town called MALGUDI . Then came his novel called THE FINANCIAL EXPERTS ( 1952 ) which is not far from his fictional town MALGUDI where a financial expert named as MARGAYYA sitting under the banyan tree gives financial advices to the town men. It also tells the story of the rise and fall of MARGAYYA in the fictional town of MALGUDI . THE GUIDE ( 1958 ) is a novel by R.K. NARAYAN which became famous more due to the Hindi film named as GUIDE . It shows how a tourist guide became a spiritual guide and then a holy man of the great honour. It shows psychological flights of Narayan. Living in a world of continuous imagination is itself an art . An art of unprecedented type .
R.K NARAYAN’S novels are unpretentious with a natural element of humour about human life. It revolves around common men of the society, neighborhood people and people of relations . Unlike his contemporary writer like Mulk Raj Anand , he was not a revolutionary . He was more human and most humorous . Apart from novels , he wrote non fiction like NEXT SUNDAY ( 1960 ) , MY DATELESS DIARY ( 1960 ) , MY DAYS ( 1973 ) , RELUCTANT GURU ( 1974 ) etc . He also wrote books on mythology and short stories . His MALGUDI DAYS ( 1942 ) became famous due to TV serial shown on Doordarshan. Graham Green , an English writer, was his friend and mentor who helped Narayan in publishing at least four of his earliest novels …..etc.
